Breaking records

Etihad Rail’s high-speed electric train promises to cut the traveling time to 30 minutes, which will positively impact Albarah El Khani, a Dubai resident who commutes from Dubai to Abu Dhabi frequently and spends Dh 3,000 monthly on the trip. Albarah hopes that the train will be functional sooner rather than later.

El Khani comments, “When Etihad rail does come, it will give a much needed connection to residents.

Travelling between the two emirates is expensive, time-consuming and not great for the environment. This rail line will make things so much easier.”

Reaching a speed of 350 km/h will put the train among the fastest in the world, eclipsing France’s TGV.

The train will also have a total of 6 stops at Reem Island, Yas Island as well as Zayed International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport from the Abu Dhabi side.

There is no official date indicating the commencement of operations, but the project has sparked interest among residents.

Convenience for Daily Life Philip Chan, a resident and owner of a restaurant, has questions on what features the train will offer, now that he is a curious observer.

“It would be amazing if there are carriages for cars within the train,” he said. “In Europe, motorail services are really popular. If we were able to drive onto the train and then drive off at the destination, it would be super convenient and probably lower the amount of highway accidents.”

For information technology engineer Ronn Santos, the announcement could have never been at a better time.

“At my wife’s recent employment offer Abu Dhabi makes it likely that I will have to commute to Dubai everyday for work,” Ronn said.

“Where the stations are located and how much the ride costs will decide if the train works for us,” he added.

“But its really nice to have more options when it comes to transport. I am hopeful it will ease the commute.”

Benefits Beyond the High-Speed Train Etihad Rail will also launch a regular speed passenger train service thst will travel at a speed of 200kmph.

This service will make use of the same track as cargo trains and will serve the routes Abu dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. It’s planned to have 4 stations and will accommodate around 400 passengers.

Challenges as well as Last Mile Connections

Josephine of El Khani expressed the conflicting thought when reflecting about the opportunities of the high-speed train.

“I believe that the last mile connection will be the most important component”, he insisted.

“They also have to provide reasonable methods of transport from the train station to final places of residence. But this is a wonderful beginning and I do believe that it will get better as time goes on.”

Another issue pertains to scheduling. This is particularly true for Sarah who lives in Deira but works on Reem Island.

She travels to her workplace every day. “I commute from home at five to reach my office before seven. If the timings do not coincide with morning schedules, it would be counterproductive for people like me. So for now, my children stand to benefit from this opportunity in the future once they step foot in the college,” she voiced.

Now at Year 11, Sarah’s children have some plans of their own as one of her children desires to study in Sharjah while the other has hopes to enroll in Abu Dhabi.

“We had thoughts of boarding school but supposing the train system is effective and dependable in the future, they would most likely prefer taking the train to and from university on a daily basis. It will allow them to return home on time for dinner.” She explained.

Etihad Rail’s new high-speed train is capable of completely altering the way travel works in the UAE.

This will enable people to traverse the Emirates in a faster, eco-friendly, and more comfortable manner.

Residents are energetic yet patient, as it’s obtrusively clear that this project is a huge leap towards progress, as more information is required.
